The Burren

The Burren in Ireland is a very other worldly karst-landscape and is the largest of its kind in Europe. It is located in Clare County and is an approximate 250 square kilometers situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Galway Bay. A 15 square kilometer portion of has been designated Burren National Park and is one of only 6 national parks in Ireland. Despite appearing to be desolate and inhospitable it is a geologists dream, with its limestone criss-crossing cracks and craggy rock formations. Similarly, a botanist would have a field day (or several) here, as the cracks and crags are filled with an abundance of ground cover foliage. If you are planning a trip to Ireland, this is a must-see!
